The 2004-05 season sees John McDermott celebrate his 154th season at Blundell Park. He has pet names for each blade of grass and can remember when it were all Scott McGarvey's round these parts.

Macca - the name on his passport, believe it or not - is something of an institution at Blundell Park. A one-club man, he had a pretty poor season by his standards last year, but no-one seems to mind if he plays like shite, because, the fact is, he's a Blundell Park legend.

He may not scurry down the wing as much as he used to, nor chase back like a rabbit chasing a carrot, but the fact is the man can defend a zillion times better than the rest of Town's rearguard over the last couple of seasons. One can only wonder whether this season may be his last...but then again, I reckon I said that last year. Injuries have begun to take their toll on his little stumpy legs, and man can only hold the entire defence together for so long. Still, he's probably forgotten more about defending than Simon Ford will ever know.

If John Fenty is any kind of decent man, he'll have the Harrington Street corner named after Macca when he finally leaves us. And I think we have to assume, at the moment at least, that John Fenty is a decent man, don't we?

Expect Macca to score just one goal this season. It'll be a 20 yeard screamer from the corner of the 18 yard box, and he'll look embarrassed at having scored it. He is nothing if not consistent, and I love him dearly...you can tell him that.
