Tuesday 9 February 2016

Conference Premier

Bromley 1 Francis (6)

Grimsby Town 2 Nolan (32), Pittman (84)

Attendance: 1074 (393 away fans)

Cod Almighty man of the match: Jon Nolan

Not an easy decision on a night when everyone played well. But Nolan brought energy, creativity and drive to a midfield that could easily have been overrun. Honourable mentions to Tait and Arnold on the right and Gowling at the back. Oh, and to McKeown for that last-minute save to earn two points.

Our gaffer says

"We fell behind in terms of games and obviously points, but I am delighted because I think that's the type of victory that the top two have managed to get.

"Without it being pretty, we managed to get the job done and defended our box well after the initial goal which set us back.

"It's very rare that you get the performances you want on a regular basis and at this time of year, because of the pitches and conditions, you have to dig deep."

More on this

Their gaffer says

Dunno. The new manager probably had more to say to his players than to the media.

Us

Played far better and showed more spirit than at any time I've seen them in the past few seasons. A 2-1 scoreline might not sound encouraging but it could so easily have been a different story.

Them

Big, physical and powerful. They won't go down but won't trouble the play-offs. Will always get a supply of loanees which will keep them afloat from local sources like Charlton Athletic and Crystal Palace if they make friends and don't get too ambitious.

Grimsby 'til I die... or cry?

This is more like it. Playing football gets results. Doing the simple things well pays off in the end. Welcome to the new boys. Keep right on to the end of the road.

Official warning

Mr N Lugg (Surrey)

Tended to go with the Bromley crowd at the start but became his own man as the match progressed. Has a reputation of awarding more yellow cards (three) than red so we should be grateful that Disley stayed on the pitch after the 78th minute. Let's hope we see him again. 8.3156.
