Grimsby Town 1
Sheffield United 3
Town won’t win League One with that squad. Of that there is no doubt. It’s lucky we’re in the fourth division then.
Let’s accentuate the positive, even if we can’t eliminate the negative. Andrew was solidly competent defensively and offensively. Action Jackson showed enough to suggest that, with Bogle and Tombola, damage can be inflicted. Pearson tried hard and was defeated only by Yorkist excellence, not his own failings.
And the rest? Gowling was beyond his level and Davies was constantly misplaced. The whole of the midfield was feeble: slow, physically underpowered and nothing special at all. It looks no better than the last league midfield Town had, just four or five insubstantial men tipping and tapping around. Dominic Vose: so far in pre-season he’s been a talented, lazy, egotistical hider. A dandelion that withers in the wind. Even when there isn’t one.
Let’s hope that the fourth division is worse than when we left it. Last season we expected promotion, this season we hope for survival. There’s a lot of stress on the word hope there. This Town, at this point, look very flimsy.
Ah, if they were wearing black and white we’d be purring. Faster, stronger, better in every way. What should have happened did happen. An immensely comfortable practice game for them, but their goalkeeper looked oddly unconvincing, even though he had nothing to do.
