Grimsby Town 0
Attendance: 3292 (269 away fans)
As others around huffed and puffed, and as the ball bounced off their toes, shins and backsides, Luke Summerfield looked like the one footballer in the Town side. He controlled the game from the middle, spread passes out wide and cleared up the messy stuff in the centre of the Gresty Road pitch. He encouraged, called the holding line, and was the first to head over to applaud the fans at the end. This may have been an abject display from the Mariners but not from cool hand Luke. He’s excused lines.
“We need to go back to basics”
When you say a thing like that at this stage of the season Russell, you lose trust, you do Russell, you lose trust.
David Artell reminded us that the Railwaymen were no amateurs. “ We dominated the first half and should have gone in more than 2-0 up. But it was a proper 90 minute performance, we were professional in the second half’. He also let us into his New Years resolution: ‘We now have to go win, win, win”. Motivational stuff David.
Town started well and had the edge for ten minutes. Then the first meaningful attack for the home side made us look daft, although Slade claimed there was a foul in the build up. Then we looked much less confident for the rest of the game despite a second half display mainly camped in the Crewe half of the pitch. Much better than last season’s horror show at Gresty Road, but still a poor performance overall. A free kick from six yards out was blasted over the bar. Even the substitutes half time warm up routine lacked confidence and none of them could be bothered to go and fetch the stray balls. Mind you it was raining.
They were better than us on the day, but still looked a poor outfit. Time wasting from the 13th minute with Garrett taking so long to set up and take his goal kicks.
The cries of Slade out, Fenty out began in the 13th minute and continued until the end. 2018 could be a tough year.
Steady Eddie kept things steady. Liked flashing his cards but was daydreaming for the Crewe time wasting goal kick routine. 6 for the Newcastle man.
Huffing and puffing up a hill to nowhere
