Division 4
Carlisle United 0
Grimsby Town 1 Hendrie (38)
Attendance: 3316 (143 away fans)
A difficult call, as there was no outstanding performer. Hendrie and Embleton both looked a vast improvement, adding a threat. Clifton looked more comfortable central, and the defenders did what defenders should do.
The great Brian Clough said the biggest crime in football is to give the ball away. Mitch Rose sometimes lost the ball, but he rarely gave it away, trying to hang on until finally someone made themselves available. He refused to lump it forward aimlessly and for this, coupled with a rock-solid tackling display, he gets the nod.
"We were resilient and deserved to win. The second half was about defending and keeping our shape. We did that."
"We shot ourselves in the foot."
We battled and scrapped and deserved the win, just. It wasn't pretty at times; in fact, it wasn't most of the time. But I will take it, as will most.
Ironically, the last report I did was Carlisle away last season. I described the division as awful and Carlisle's status as play-off possibles indicative of it. The division is still awful and they've gone backwards.
Mr M Coy (Co Durham)
Made some odd decisions with regard to consistency but tried to let everyone get on with it and didn't get suckered by constant home shouts for a penalty late on. So, did OK.
He started here and could have ended here too. We did play some good stuff in flashes. We are a work in progress. The core travelling support clearly like Jolley and want him to do well.
