Let's get our mojo back

9 September 2019

Trentside Diary writes: It was one of those days on Saturday. Summer is over but the sun was shining and all was well with the world. The route into town takes us down Freemo and the Dock Tower was a cardboard scenery cut-out against a blue backdrop. Our football routine includes a trip to a nearby chippy if we have time. Nothing beats local chippies with proper fishcakes; none of those breadcrumbed imposters. Saturday there were a fair few Railwaymen fans taking the opportunity to partake of our local delicacy. Or so I thought – but on closer view most were on the Puke pies. Pies in the fish and chip capital of the world. Just why would you? Disappointing, but they had the last laugh. Even the chap with the russet, nylon toupee! Very difficult not to stare.

On to the newly fan-friendly Blundell Park. A nuclear hot chocolate, again one of our pre-match rituals, and we settled down to the match. Third versus fourth, it was always going to be nervy and so it proved to be. A missed penalty and you just knew it wasn’t going to be our day. The little passes into open space were there, but no Mariner running into that space to take the attack forward. The dinks past the opposition happened but we left the ball behind. We were beaten by a better team on the day, one of our bogey teams and one of the strongest in the league. We’re going to have matches like that but we pick ourselves up and go again.

Sadly, there are always a few, and the first online posting I saw was "Manager must go now before it’s too late". I’m hoping that was a wind up. There was at least one other numpty who felt vindicated because he’d been saying all season that Ogbu was rubbish. Fortunately, most people seemed to take a more pragmatic attitude with "we’re going to have bad matches, let’s not go overboard". In the '15-16 promotion season we’d won two, drawn three this far into the season, so we’re two points up on that and it’s still looking good. Let’s kick on and get our mojo back for tomorrow night. UTM!
