The main problem about me writing about this goal is that I can't really remember that much about it! I know it was against Huddersfield on a Tuesday night at Blundell Park and one of those games when all was going right (remember them?). A 4-0 win and I couldn't even tell you which of the four it was.
A sweeping move down the left towards the Pontoon stand. First-time passes working the ball forward – Cockerill, Cunnington, Gilbert – who else? – and, from deep in our defence, seconds later the ball was in the Huddersfield net. I remember Alan Buckley jumping from the dugout in delight, shouting and pointing at all around him. That was it, the whole passing and movement thing shown in a few seconds. Everything looked so simple. If there were any doubts about the quality of the team we had before that moment, we knew then. This was something special. We were on our way to another promotion.

There are other fantastic goals in the list – Jevons at Liverpool, Kalala against Spurs, Brolly against Everton – and others that didn't make it (Kevin Donovan's volley at Burnley in the Auto Windscreens semi-final?) but this was football at its best. The beautiful game. A goal made by a team rather than an individual.
Has my fading memory made it better than it was? If I watched it again now, would I be disappointed? No, Roly was right.
You really won't see a better goal on any pitch in the world.
