Town's greatest goals: the top 50
The old ideas are often the best, and it is therefore with no great sense of originality, but with a great deal of pride and pleasure, that Cod Almighty has decided to determine Town's greatest goal. Well, our greatest goal since 1979, to be exact. We would love to have been there when Ponting's goal secured the second division championship at Hull in 1934, and have no doubt that the goals of Glover and Bestall that got to us to two FA Cup semi-finals deserve their place in any top ten, but, despite appearances, we are too young to remember them.
With a little regret, therefore, we've decided to limit ourselves to the last quarter-century. If you remember goals from the 1970s or earlier that deserve wider recognition, though, please let us know – we'd love to hear from you.
On the next page, we have listed 50 of Town's most interesting goals in recent memory. We asked you to select up to five that you think deserve to be ranked among Town's greatest – whether the best, the most significant or even the oddest.
We think we've picked out all the obvious choices – the ones that secured promotions or big cup wins – but we've also allowed ourselves one or two personal choices. There were a few favourites that you thought no-one else would remember – that great Lumby, Lewis, Lester or Lund goal that lit up an otherwise humdrum occasion.
We'll start running down the order of those great goals from Monday 15 January with the ones that got away. By the end we'll then know, once and for all, what is Town's greatest goal, since 1979.*
