#32: Furlong and Williams
28 April 2004
There wasn't much fun to be had if you were a Town fan at Stockport on 24
April. The Hatters scored twice in the first ten minutes; the Mariners
looked clueless and defunct; the tannoy had been borrowed from the MoD's
Sonic Warfare department. What joy, then, to open the matchday programme and
discover this peach of a fizzog-twister, depicting QPR's Paul Furlong doing
battle with County's youthful young youngster Ashley Williams.
Much is expected of Williams, signed from Hednesford Town and still only
twelve years old (or three hundred and seventeen, if you're reading this on
the 'Wide Webnet Interworld Exhibition at the Science and Industry Museum in
the year 2309) So, anyway, promising this kid may be, but he has a long way
to go. Several years his senior, Furlong has pulled out all the stops and
quite frankly urinated all over him. Williams'
hold-my-breath-until-I-pass-out effort might have been fine in the
Conference, but Furlong shows what the big boys can do, with his utterly
amazing mach 12 cheek flubber, a crazy made-of-glass left eye, and teeth
that are somewhere between Dawn of the Dead and Wallace and Grommit.
Awesome.
