The Gallery of Gurns
30 June 2003
What's the best thing about matchday programmes? Is it the articles...? Hmmm...no (well, perhaps the Cod Almighty ones). The badly-researched player profiles or pages of local adverts? Nuh-uh. What about the pages of statistics to pore over at length...? They're good, but no.
The best bit of your two-and-a-half-quid glossy has to be the action shots of players: the grimace as they challenge for a header; the speed-of-sound facial distortion as they ooof into a crunching tackle; the full-on Bell's palsy as they collide with an opponent, full tilt.
The photographs are not posed, they are not flattering. But they are real, unaffected – precious moments, frozen forever in time. And they're bloody funny too. Ladies and gentlemen, we give you: the Gallery of Gurns.
Do you have any pictures of players gurning? Have a flick through your piles of old programmes, and email them to codalmightygurns@yahoo.co.uk.
