The one where people have been watching a lot of tv
29 January 2003
In this edition of the Postbag: karaoke; YTV show their commitment to local football; Galli's home videos?; Blair was right on new year's day; and John Huston's lowest moment.
Did anyone catch Look North the night before Sheffield United hoofed their way to a first leg win over Liverpool? Apparently the Blades are releasing a pop record, something to do with Ray Stubbs' favourite player Peter Ndlovu (no-one else remember Stubbsy's fixation in the mid 90s when Ndlovu was at Coventry?). Listening to the report you'd have thought they were the first team to nab the tune to "Tom Hark" by the Piranhas for their own gains. It seems like only yesterday that Gooner fans were singing "Thierry Henry" to the same tune.

Further to my Goals On Sunday letter last week, I noticed there were eleven goals scored in Nationwide League matches involving teams from the Yorkshire TV region at the weekend. Eight of those goals were scored by "our" teams. No Goals On Sunday this Sunday though despite a "Yorkshire" derby.

Kieron Dyer on the blower to Jonathon Woodgate telling him how great Newcastle is. I wonder if Dyer is lining up the star for his next home video. I would suggest Galli gets in touch with any of his useful footballing mates with similar stories of how great Grimsby is. But I guess now he's settled down and given up his party hard lifestyle it'll be a hard sell.

I have finally done it. I have finally accepted that relegation is a very real possibility this year.
The Bradford game was the turning point. I have just read Tony's match report. Had we beaten them the relegation fight would have been 3 from 5 or
6 (depending on how Walsall felt like playing for the next few weeks) but now it is 3 from the bottom 4 that are going down. I don't think
Bradford or Walsall will get dragged into it.
How can this happen? Up until this point I have been convinced that we wouldn't go down. Look what has changed since the start of last
season. I mean we have Groves in charge instead of Lennie now. And Groves has contacts
and got some decent players in. Players I have heard of. Last deadline day we signed players whose names I knew, and not just from playing
Championship Manager.
I'm used to people here not knowing the names of any Grimsby players. They often struggle to know anything about the town or club. But in the
last year people have been mentioning to me the names of our players. "Hey, doesn't play for your lot know? He's not bad him." Things like that. And it is this strange concept, a Grimsby Town team containing players
other people have heard of, that has been a great source of comfort to me.
But are these players just reputations without the talent to back it up? Have we just been really unlucky with injuries and match officials?
Maybe we will know in May.

I caught half an hour of Escape To Victory last night. If Town ever sack Groves they should go for Michael Caine. "As a gentleman I ask you to at least give us a sporting chance." Useful advice to the referees of late.
