The Diary

Pocket sized and grim. Maybe it's a sign!

10 May 2022

I was thinking about what I had to do today, starting with this diary, bit of ironing, dog training and then it suddenly hit me: it's game day. The day suddenly got a lot more exciting. Not sure why it wasn't front and central in my brain but it's there now! I think I probably hadn't registered it was Tuesday, let alone the much-rearranged Boreham Wood fixture. Get yourself down to Blundell Park for our last home game of the season.

So where are we? I think we've all just about agreed that Saturday was weird. After all the machinations and calculations of the last few weeks we now only need one point to confirm a play-off place. Doable? Being Town fans we know we're more than capable of messing it up, so no-one will relax until we've got it. Could it be tonight?

The positive for us is Boreham Wood need to win to stand any chance of being in the top seven at the end of the season. If I was their manager what would I be thinking? Whilst I wouldn't be too gung-ho, they are going to have to go for it. That could be good for Town. We always seem to play better against decent sides, saving our poor performances for the lower sides who we fail to break down. This could be good. I don't think any of us really want to have to wait till Sunday for the outcome. It really would be too stressful.

The McAtee shoulder question. It's amazing how some fans have suddenly become experts on his injury and what further damage might mean. He must basically be fit enough to run out or he wouldn't have been on the bench on Saturday. I'm assuming he's there and Hursty won't use him unless he has to "just in case", at least for now. That's a lot of pressure if he does come on but he seems to handle it well. Don't you just love a striker in his pomp?

After so many players in the weekly team, it was good to see Hursty get Manager of the Month for April. He has so many detractors but I think he's decent and he can certainly pick a player. No, he doesn't get everything right. Does any manager ever, get everything right? I don't think so. Even the lauded Buckley, who will always be many fans' favourite, wasn't great in 'Buckley 3 - Revenge of the Non-chairman'. Not a popular opinion? We all have our views and it's no secret that George Kerr will forever be number one in my manager hall of fame.

As for Hursty, never forget we are a team that does well under pocket-sized, dour managers. I can't be doing with managers who run up and down the touch line, throwing themselves about if their team scores. It always looks a bit too contrived to me.

UTM!
