A team about to step into the telephone booth

10 September 2025

You can buy tickets for next Saturday's game, at home to Cambridge United, here.

We don't often start the CA Diary with ticket information, but this week, this month, this season, it makes sense. To borrow from Retro Diary, we are on the cusp of a golden age.

And there is no knowing which match will be the one you will forever regret missing. Forget the big cup games and the promotion clinchers. You can see them coming a mile off, in the length of the queue for tickets. Newbegin Diary means the match where everything clicks, leaving a glow to last a lifetime.

We are approaching the 35th anniversary of Grimsby's 4-0 win over Huddersfield. An ordinary looking game in prospect, a Clark Kent among Tuesday night fixtures, but it turned into Superman. Containing the goal from the end of the World, that was the one which defined the remarkable resurgence of the Mariners. For Alan Buckley read Dave Artell, for John Cockerill read Kieran Green: we are close to touching heaven.

Our win last weekend felt for a time like a defeat, so high were expectations raised that we could somehow correct an indelible wrong. Now our second half subsidence is almost a blessing in disguise, fuelling the urge to put everything right at the next opportunity.

It might not work like that of course, but don't say you weren't warned if it does.
