Cod Almighty | Diary
Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty
17 June 2014
A brief Middle-Aged Diary today, what with Grimsby Town continuing their recent trend towards doing things right. I'll try and tip you off for some more substantial lunchtime reading though.
The new strip looks good, with red socks and white sleeves calibrated to win the approval of the Town fan in their late 40s or older. Perhaps the photoshoot on the docks is a nod to Lawrie McMenemy's fabled visits in 1971-72. Almost certainly it is not a hint that a dockside stadium relocation is on the cards after all.
Cod Almighty's benign mood even extends to forgiving Friday night football. Our editorial team are giving active consideration to visiting Matlock on 18 July to take in the newly arranged friendly on Ross Hannah's old turf.
Grimsby's cessation of miserableness has even taking hold nationally, with everyone very forgiving of England's defeat last Saturday. The mood may not last, making an email from Against League 3 timely. When the post-mortem starts, let's make sure the debate is genuinely about what is best for the game as a whole in this country, and not allow the Premiership 'haves' to dress their special pleading as being "for the good of the national team".
No-one has taken up my suggestion last week that you keep an eye out for Town players past or present who have sneaked into the World Cup incognito. Didn't anyone else think the small, agile but rash Honduras goalkeeper bore a definite resemblance to Paul Reece?
