Cheer up Ferdinand

23 June 2014

Danny Boshell went to Guiseley. Phil Barnes went to Gainsborough. It's a two-way thing, you know. The vast majority of the 3,493 players who have drawn a wage from Grimsby Town FC over the last five years have inflicted major and perhaps irreparable damage to the club. But the Mariners have repaid the favour by wrecking the careers of many an unsuspecting footballer. In the latest such instance, Scott Kerr – who many fans were surprised to see released by GTFC at the end of the 2013-14 season – has joined Bradford Park Avenue.

Many fans, granted, will also be surprised to learn that Bradford Park Avenue did not, in fact, cease to exist after exiting the Football League in 1970 and are alive and well in the Conference North. So Kerr still has some way to go to match Richard Hope. Hope, of course, was the erstwhile central defensive paragon of Shrewsbury and Wrexham who joined Town in 2008, played seven games, and then got as far away from football as he could, not only quitting the game but launching a new career on the North Sea oil rigs.

Ron Foster went to Reading. Shame it wasn't Gloucester.

So what can we do in the absence of Hurst's Elusive Fourth Signing? Well, your original/regular Diary has noticed that there's a World Cup, a test match, the first day of Wimbledon, and an official GTFC video which you'll probably have watched already over the weekend. Still…

Personally I think the audio mixing could have used more work, as the music comes up too loudly in the second half and drowns out the speech, while Turgoose's delivery at the beginning is a little hurried and lacking in gravitas… neh, just kidding. Bloody great work, Town. If the club carries on like this, they'll end up selling loads of season tickets or something.
