22 August 2012

A good team knows not to rely on one player. Grimsby Town, of course, is not a good team. It hasn't been a good team for a long time, so when the only thing good about it gets crocked then you almost feel the panic of the fans radiating from your computer screen.

What happens next in times of crisis depends on your leader. If you've just parted with a lot of cash to watch what you thought was going to be lots of entertaining football, only to then learn that the only player worth the entrance fee is going to be out injured for close to the whole season, then understandably you're going to be feeling very sore. And in your West Yorkshire Diary's humble opinion, the last thing you want to do right now is listen to your millionaire chairman patronise you and tell you to do something you've been doing all your bloody life.

I've looked at that article (which, for the NSNOS, is an achievement in itself). I've studied the picture of our great leader. I've thought about the ramifications of Liam Hearn not playing again this season. I did think about how counter-productive it would be not to get behind the boys. And then I decided not to listen to that interview.

Elsewhere in the Marinersphere, if you wanted to have an online chinwag with the Telewag's deputy sports editor Lee Jones then I'm afraid you're too late. Lee took questions from Town fans at lunchtime through that snazzy live chat facility of theirs. At 12:10 someone called Wayne weighed in with this:

"Hi... with total respect to you... financing Grimsby town football club, your history or success rate leaves alot to be desired. ie manager in the past from from all clubs alike grimsby town football club get the sack at the first sign of the downward spiral / religation. Abopv all the directors employ the managers, so what does that say about the the running of the club, isnt ti about time the guy at the top changed. someone with different ideas, purpose and ambition."

Lee and the Town fans continued their discussions about Hearn's injury, the benefits of scouting in Norway and the merits of going 4-5-1 at Wrexham on Saturday. It's a pity that the most poignant comment of the entire webchat went completely and utterly ignored.
