Division 4

Grimsby Town 1 Rose (16)

3 Number 8 (49), Number 29 (53), Number 24 (90+5)

Attendance: 5,853 (303 away fans)

Sponsors' man of the match: Danny Rose

Ah, some more corporate schmoozers seeking top teeth tips from the man with that bright ring of confidence around his neck. Or is that the albatross of captaincy?

Cod Almighty man of the match: No-one

Justin Spiderlegs was fine for half an hour; Hume wasn't so bad, all things considered, considering he was up against the destroyer of Glennon; Khouri tried his best to replace the divots and rake the bunkers. Sort of being okay is as good as it gets, overall, all things considered.

Our gaffer says

Repeat ad nauseum. We're getting sick of it Dave. I'm sure you are too. We don't want your head on a platter but only you can make all this world seem right:

"Could quite easily been two all or two nil to us…that's where we're at. Sometimes you just have to take your medicine."

Yeah, but is it working?

Watching this Town is like watching the tide come in and go out. You know what's going to happen, how it's going to happen, when it's going to happen. And it happens. No one is surprised, it's just the way it is.

The only change is if the wind blows, then the sea wall gets breached, the railway tracks get swept away and there's flooding down Neville Street. Yes, we'd built a sea wall, but it needs to be higher and made of stronger concrete to withstand the weather, for weather is still out there.

Town were pretty tasty for half an hour, then they ran out of puff.

At home it isn't whether Town concede, but when.

Them

Grimsby 'til I die... or cry?

Shoulders dropped, shoulders shrugged.

Official warning

Mr S Oldham

This particular pastel peeper seemed to have a problem with one of his arms. He could only point one way. Town got every mad decision going in the first half but were mildly miffed at the madness of the man called Oldham as the afternoon, the day, the year, slipped gently into the past: 6.441. And why not?

Readers' digest

Good, then bad and an ugly denouement.

In a word: receding
