Diary - Wednesday 11 December 2002

11 December 2002

Bit of a slow day for news. The Grimsby Telegraph passes the time by speculating about the line-up for this weekend's visit to Preston, where the injured John McDermott, it says, is to be replaced at right-back by Simon Ford, whose erstwhile centre-back berth will in turn be filled by the player-manager himself Mr Paul Groves. Which, given the excellent recent form of Iain Ward and the need for a more settled back four, sounds to the Diary like too much tinkering. But Darren Mansaram should return up front. And Macca might be back in time for the Christmas fixtures. Nobody really knows for sure yet, but it fills a bit of space.

The Jellygraph also uses a Phil Jevons interview to break the lull. After joining Hull in September on a season-long loan, Town's former Everton striker scored a few goals quite quickly but now can't get off the bench. Sound familiar? The gist of the interview is that he quite likes it there but doesn't know what will happen at the end of it. It keeps life exciting though, eh, Phil.

Town chairman Peter Furneaux, meanwhile, is an unexpected contender for this year's John Prescott Award for services to the English language thanks to the increasingly iffy BBCi Humber Sport website. "We've settled the players moneys for what we were holding until this money came in," reads a quote from Mr F on the site. "For the appearance moneys, we've also taken on our French colleague, again, which we're having to hold on until the money came, which it hasn't." Is there an editor in the house?
