11 February 2006
On the way to the match, the Diary and my two companions agreed that we would settle for a crap game and a 1-0 win, given Town's injury and suspension list and Boston's irritating refusal to let us beat them in three earlier attempts. In the end we got a crap first half, a reasonable second, a 1-0 win, and Steve Evans being removed from Blundell Park by the police. It's all about expectation management, and suddenly the world doesn't seem too bad.
Internationally renowned media organisation Sporting Life has paid a professional sports journalist to report that today's result at Blundell Park was Boston's third home defeat of the season and in fact took place at York Street. Despite Steve Mildenhall having to make a couple of ace saves, the Diary begs to differ from the consensus that Town's win represents some grave miscarriage of justice, since Boston were as bad as Russell Slade's Fen Butcher-free team in the first half and not much better in the second. With the Mariners just about keeping their heads and all around them losing theirs, the 72nd-minute winner from whoever it is who's going round calling himself Michael Reddy has taken GTFC back to the top of the league. Who would have expected that two weeks ago?
