Cod Speedos for Harry, England but not George

Your A46 Diary has heard some talk about club over country. Recency bias always has a say in this. England are right in front of us, doing well, right now. Some take the opportunity to try to turn us from our club-first, cold-Tuesday-night-in-Feb attitude to a bunch of nation-first, summer-loving Englanders. Like we used to say about the Germans. How's that working out for them?

It creates debates over lines in the sand: what would you give for your country? Where's the limit of what would you sacrifice for England to win the World Cup? A cup run? Would you swap our quarter finals? Anfield? What about individual results? Manchester United? Would you give up the play-offs? Which ones? You're not allowed to swap defeats. Northampton, Forest Green or Solihull?

Promotions are too much to swap, right? And those cup nights and days are all ours forever; can't give those away. A three points we once didn't need? Can't think when I ever felt we didn't need a win. Every three points is a jewel in the black and white dragon's horde, jealously guarded.

Where's the line? FA Cup? Champs League? Promotion? There isn't a line. Wouldn't give them a point. Picking England over any Town achievement is like running away with your holiday romance and abandoning your family. Some nice touches in the box during the summer months but that won't warm you in the winter.

That said, I'm looking forward to tomorrow night and I hope we do well. But if we don't, then we won't be too disappointed. So, let's enjoy looking at a nice beach-ready body in bikini or speedos and then grab the long trousers, jumpers and jackets of our long term relationships.
