24 August 2011
Last night's game against Cambridge established more than one significant milestone in GTFC history. It wasn't just Town's first win of the 2011-12 season, nor Shorty and Shouty's first ever home win for Town. It was also the first time your original/regular Diary, having at first thought the Mariners had again failed to capitalise on a good attacking position, has ever greeted a winning goal for our team with the words "oh, for fuck's sake".
We don't have a report for this match but there's a post-match factfile, by jingo, and there are decent accounts of it over at Too Good To Go Down and What About The Orange?. Those are a couple of blogs you really need to be following, if you're not already, by the way.
So who could overlook the quality possession football played by the Mariners for significant spells of last night's game? Only an observer determined to find no positives at all. Me, I enjoyed it. I thought Town were good when we had the ball. I also thought we looked dangerously like conceding for some of the time when we didn't have the ball. There's about as much chance of GTFC being promoted this season as there is of Tory rule creating a happy, united and fair nation. But now and again you just have to say screw the bigger picture, my team's just won, I'm glad. And at least when the Tory rule at Blundell Park culminates with GTFC's decline into part-time football, well, at least it won't be quite so embarrassing to lose 5-0 to a part-time football team.
