Diary - Friday 8 June 2012

8 June 2012

Yesterday, Mardy Diary wrote of the envy that arises in the close season when another diarist gets a story. However, as Middle-Aged Diary, I have to admit to some relief if I am not required to make a judgement, and can just waffle on about something that happened two decades ago. Given my timidity, I doff my cap to Guest Diary who (although I admit I cannot find the entry now), some 13 months ago, argued on the grounds of common sense and common humanity that Town should reach a settlement with Boston over the services of Scott and Hurst. He was of course vindicated when Town were left with far greater legal costs than the compensation Boston had originally requested.

The thought comes back to mind as John Fenty and Barrow manager David Bayliss indulge in megaphone diplomacy over the compensation due to the Bluebirds for the Mariners' acquisition of Andy Cook. Some would call this good media management. Some would... Most would call it an idiotic and patronising attempt, by both parties, to keep their followers onside when they would be far better off actually negotiating before they start trashing each other. Why not use the benefit of hindsight, Mr Fenty, and treat your peers with respect? Oh, but according to Cook we are a "massive" club, so perhaps the board members and managers of other Conference clubs aren't really our peers. Two years, ten years, and still we learn nothing.
