14 November 2012
First he extended his right leg, lifted up his trouser leg a little, shook it a bit and out fell a few empty packets of cat food, some potato peel and a stale slice of bread. Then he extended his left leg and wobbled it about until a squashed plastic bottle, a jam jar lid and the leftovers from last night's pork dinner slid out. Yes, that's right - Scott Neilson has been getting the rubbish out of his legs.
It's a curious phrase that your West Yorkshire Diary has never seen or heard before. Well I'm glad the lad from Crawley has been able to rid his legs of such trash after his petulant kick at a Macclesfield man meant he missed our last three games. Since Joe Colbeck picked up an injury in the weekend win over Woking, it appears Neilson's route back into the starting XI for this Saturday's game against Braintree is obvious.
In case you couldn't be bothered to read the article on the Telegraph website, Neilson played his part in the stiffs' 2-2 draw against Chesterfield at Blundell Park yesterday afternoon. Greg Pearson and Dayle Southwell put the Mariners 2-0 up, before the fourth division side's second string made their recovery. Anthony Elding didn't feature. Speculate the shit out of that.
Since it's a long established fact that the first team does better when the reserve team does badly (and visa versa), no-one quite knows what happens to the first team when the reserve team draws. Maybe the world will implode. Maybe this is where they meet, and the first team will draw 2-2 against Braintree. I'm fed up of not being able to beat Braintree. I hope they're not the new Tamworth.
There isn't a lot of GTFC matter floating around the ether today, I'm afraid. A standard web chat with the Telegraph's sports writer Lee Jones has come and gone, and there is a reminder that Lawrie 'Big Mac' McMenemy is going to be speaking to fans at an event organised by the Mariners Trust this Friday in the multi-purpose function suite named after him. At least I think it's in there - better just double check... no, I can't seem to find any confirmation. It just says Blundell Park. Well, if you're going, just check yourself. I'm on a short lunch break.
A few weeks ago I mentioned how a friend of mine, who supported Slough Town as a child, boasted about his side getting further in this year's FA Cup than Grimsby. After drawing 0-0 in the first round at Mansfield 10 days ago Slough took them to penalties in the replay at Holloways Park last night but lost 4-1 on penalties. As a result, they've missed out on the chance to play Lincoln, who beat Walsall 3-2 after extra time, in the second round. He would've gone to Sincil Bank for that. I think I would've joined him, you know.
The FA Cup second round has also paired MK Dons against AFC Wimbledon, but I really haven't got the time to explain in words how much contempt I hold for that shoddy, plastic, Bastard Franchise Scum excuse of a club they claim to be. I'll leave that to someone else.
