2 November 2012

Mardy Diary writes: We're in the money. We're in the money. La da di da... oh. Still, the sell-on from Ryan Bennett has allowed us to at least appear to be temporarily solvent. Small mercies. But Fenty says that it's misleading - some of the money has been spent already, some we have yet to receive. In truth, all of it has been spent already, along with any future income for a good long while. Unless we get some good ol'-fashioned football fortune. Multiples of football fortune, preferably.

I love a bit of football fortune, me. Love it. That's why I spent ten years gambling with a season ticket at Town in the hope of securing some. Unfortunately the return was a huge, big, fat, massive, gigantic zero. Oh well - shit or bust again, people? Stick everything on number one - this time, more than any other time this time...

If you've missed the Cod Almighty match previews of late, never fear - we'll try and get them back up and running in the coming weeks. We've been so busy that the site has actually been self-generating content in our absence, but couldn't be arsed to write the preview. Team news for the weekend is that the new bloke is keen, the managers aren't being complacent about the opposition, and an ex-player remembers his time at Town fondly but wants the chance to play against us. The usual then.

We've had a couple more emails about great Town comebacks - although I don't think we're going to top the 4-4 mentioned t'other day. Dave the Engineer offers a correction on the Barnsley match: "The comeback was from two-nil down at half time to win 3-2. I was in the Pontoon as usual. More hair, less intelligence in those days. Oh if only we had a team like that now!"

On similar lines Martin Robinson has this to say: "I don't remember the Town v Barnsley match as such, cos nobody would take me (sniff). Still mad about it now. However, I was regaled with the details by my 12-year-old mates. Batchy did give it to the Barnsley fans and I recall seeing the Barnsley hordes playing football on Meggies beach in the morning. Can't we get Nigel's take on this match if he still remembers?"

Martin goes on to say: "Around the 1980-81 era I recall Yorkshire TV visiting Wybers Wood school to film the town players training on our pitch! Martin Tyler in sheepskin coat doing interviews, Batch posing with his bubble perm." I have a vague recollection of this myself - although I would have been fairly young. I do remember grabbing the first thing I found to get the players to sign. It was a blank postcard - I got a few strange looks.

Enjoy your weekend, and we'll finish with a mini book review by Martin: "Just read 32 Programmes by Dave Roberts, enjoyable read about a sad anorak who collects footie programmes from 60s onwards. He has to decide which 31 programmes he takes to America, when he goes to live there, from his thousand+ collection. It's worth a read, though the only Town connection in the book is when he watches Leeds v Man U about 1982 and Scott McGarvey is leading the line for United with Garry Birtles. Both went on to play for Town. McGarvey's Town debut was at Elland Road, where he was sent off. My other memory of this match is the paltry turnout of about 150 Town fans, despite various posers at school saying they would be going! Leeds fans' reputation at the time was quite daunting..."
