A case can be made for three players, all of whom have had their periods as scapegoats of choice. Colgan did more than any of the defenders to keep us in the game, although none of his saves were ones you wouldn't expect a keeper to make. We improved considerably after Hegarty came on: contrary to received opinion, he is capable of taking his man on and delivering a decent cross. The man who most troubled the opposition was Akpa-Akpro, however, who seems to have added intelligence and a decent left foot finish to his usual pace and strength.
The team we aspire to be: hard working with more than a touch of culture. Some things change; apparently Crewe don't.
Vociferous support to the rhythm of a drum, slowly fading and perhaps a little too quick to apportion blame.
Mr C Webster (Tyne & Wear)
A portly figure, the referee perhaps performs with a subconscious fear that his weight will be used against him if he comes to the attention of the home crowd. He might have realised the Crewe support were in a stupor, but there is not too much he got obviously wrong and one thing - the sending off- he got obviously right. Let's say 5.5.
Some Town sides of recent memory might have subsided without a struggle; this one twice got itself back into contention and managed to stay competitive even on a night when we weren't playing well.
