Before he goes. He did keep attempting to do things, and did look upset by his, and everyone else's, failing.
Being the best of a bad bunch does not mean the banana is edible.
"We were second-best and lost too many battles and I find that unbelievable in the situation we are in."
"We weren't fluent in the first half but did a lot better when we changed the shape in the second half. We showed the good brand of football we can play."
At least they tried. They were basic and did the basic things adequately: they simply ran around more than Town, and had more mental strength. Deeply average, like a southern Macclesfield, they were, on this day of days, far superior to a rather pathetic Grimsby Town team. Two wingers with rangy flicks and pace, a couple of tireless runners up front with beefy defenders and a midfield which just got in the way of pedestrians, like mobile dustbins. They kicked it a long way quickly and then ran after the ball. Simple stuff, and their fearlessness was simply too much for the frigid and fragile.
All things considered, remarkably sanguine. Awake at a wake.
Mr G Salisbury (Lancs)
John McDermott could have been the referee and Town would still have lost. The referee was incidental. He gets 6.000 for turning up, starting at the right time and not playing too many added minutes. Dr Death got it over as quickly as he could.
