Cod Almighty man of the match: Peter Till

There were plenty who were alright, with some not bad at all. Boshell was a prominent prodder, with Jarman an enigmatic enzyme but again the wilting laurels go to the frequent flyer. Peter Till was Town's threat, aided ably by his valet and chauffeur.

Our gaffer says

"We are all very disappointed and the scoreline flatters them but we only have ourselves to blame. Yet again we played some really good football that was pleasing on the eye but let ourselves down in both boxes. For all our possession in the first half, we didn't threaten and then we lost concentration at a corner and went behind."

Their gaffer says

"A score of 3-0 may sound comfortable but it was far from that -€“ Grimsby are one of the better teams we have played. In the first half especially, I felt we were second best but we got a goal at a good time... In the second period I thought we just shaded it."

Them

A competent and confident version of Lincoln, they were, tactically and aesthetically, a professional pub team. They played a deeply dreary but ultimately effective game based on probabilities. Shots were thwacked low and hard from angles, for divots may divert, or may not. Passes were pinballed rather than pinged, for misheaders and misclearances will get corners or possession, or may not. There was no art, only Brownian Motion. Unfortunately Town's gas chamber is leaking. Gillingham were persistent and they did have some vigour. They do move forward en bloc, with some pace and purpose so, as horrible as it was to watch, they did at least do what their manager told them to do. His plans worked, so he'll be happy.

Official warning

Mr G Hegley (Herts)
Not really an actor in this local rep version of Twelfth Night, or if he was then he was Malvolio: a capable administrator who lacks humour. He missed a few, saw a few, so gets a few: 6.999. One potential penalty not awarded is not a reason to berate the innocent.

Accentuate the positive

It wasn't as bad as you think. Take away the goals and it had 0-0 written all over it. Gaelic football beat croquet today.
