Poor Dayle Southwell. He's got more strikers in front of him than a copper at Orgreave colliery. And every time Town's home-grown frontman seems to get closer to the first team – say, when Anthony Elding finally bogged off – more reinforcements arrive ahead of him. One step forward, you might say, Lenell John-Lewis back. But at least he currently ranks higher in the pecking order than a player who hasn't kicked a ball in anger for half a year after his leg nearly fell off. That's the message from a depressingly SEO-dictated Grimsby Telegraph story today which is somehow headlined "Liam Hearn hoping to return in time for Wembley FA Trophy final", despite not featuring any kind of quote at all from Liam Hearn.
The first team's loss is the reserves' gain, though, as Southwell continued his prolific run in the stiffs with a goal in yesterday's encounter against King$ton Communication$ FC. As far as your original/regular Diary could see, the match wasn't mentioned on Town's newly superb new official website until after it had taken place. There is no mention of the game, furthermore, on the NSNOS' reserves page (which hasn't been updated to include the result at Rotherham eight days ago). Presumably, then, the GTFC web editor was as taken by surprise as second-choice keeper Greg Fleming, who shipped four second-half goals as our nouveau-riche north bank neighbours strolled to an easy win.
In the absence of any further news today, the Diary would like to salute Rafael Benitez. The latest soon-to-be-ex-Chelsea manager has hit out at the numpties among his club's support who greeted his appointment by wetting their nappies because of some offhand remark or other made by Benitez about Chelsea when he managed another club 417 years ago. Many right-thinking supporters will surely join with me in applauding Benitez, and heaven forbid the thought that any of them have ever, say, abused Alan Buckley on a messageboard or threatened to burn their season tickets if Russell Slade came back to save Town from relegation to the Conference. Hashtag just saying. See you next time!
