Diary - Wednesday 3 April 2013
3 April 2013
Town play Macclesfield tonight in a game that was originally postponed because the players' coach was made to travel on the M62 somewhere between Gildersome and Chain Bar during rush hour on a Friday night in winter by an obscure sports channel on a crusade to reinvent Friday night football just when everyone else was fed up with it.
Anyone who knows anything about this particular corridor of West Yorkshire - like your West Yorkshire Diary, for example - will have been able to tell you that there is an accident every night on that part of the M62. It's perhaps an exaggeration for me to claim that I saw it coming, but it was partly the reason why I didn't attempt to drive to the game that night. (The other part being that I was still bitter and fuming about the fixture being switched from the Saturday when I had a whole weekend planned around it).
So the games continue to come thick and fast. It's funny how they're not said to be thin and slow when there's a bit of a gap in the fixture list. Some players will be tired and dropped; some players will be tired but made to play anyway because Shorty says we don't have much cover in certain areas (I imagine he means in central defence). Others may be fresh. We don't know.
We've played a lot of games recently and the players are exhausted, blah, blah, blah. But before we start sympathising with ourselves too much, let's note that the Silkmen are also about to play their fourth game in eight days. So let's not bother with that excuse if things don't work out tonight.
In all honesty there's no news today. There are still bits and pieces dripping through in the Grimmo Telegraph about the win at Stockport. There's a belief that Ross Hannah will probably score a few more goals between now and the end of the season because he scored that goal on Monday. But otherwise that's your lot, really.
Oh, apart from Aswad Thomas being in the running for the England C player of the year award. I'm not really sure what England C players need to have achieved to be a credible candidate and a deserved winner of the award. But if it's solely down to the fans' vote then anything could happen - like the time fans on the old Electronic Fishcake joined forces about 12 years ago to vote Stacy Coldicott player of the month when he'd spent the whole month out injured. They were successful too, and the Yard Dog scooped the award that was sponsored by a sports drink or something. I dunno. It was a long time ago.
Enjoy the match tonight. Let's hope those travelling to Cheshire are rewarded and let's hope tomorrow's Diary has more interesting things to write about.
