Cod Almighty | Diary
What time is it? Five to something (5-2, geddit?)
25 September 2013
A week ago we lost 4-0 to Halifax, we then lost a manager, drew to Chester at the weekend and last night we beat Dartford 5-2 at home. Standard week for Grimsby Town FC plc. It was nice to see the club we all love, win a game at home with some absolute corkers of goals and some beautiful football on the hallowed turf. If you can, have a look at the highlights. They'll make you giddy.
I sighed and thumped a wall when we went down 1-0, but like something that rises out of something, Town conquered all and came back playing sexy football. Cod Almighty's man with the words, Tony B, said: "Total football, totally fantastic at times. Sublime and beautiful." Have a bang on the report when it comes out. Nice to see five different goalsorers too. I don't care who scores them or with what limb – just bang 'em in, lads.
A lopsided 4-4-2 is apparently what we played last night. Wait. What? We played 4-4-2 and won a game? Crazy. Someone should have maybe mentioned this before.
I particularly like Shorty's comment in his post-match reaction when talking about playing other teams in the league: "Teams might not have the most eye-catching name, but they know the league and they've got some decent players". I have been guilty many a time of wallowing in self-pity, feeling sorry for us when playing teams such as Nuneaton, Alfreton, Tamworth, Braintree and Halifax when we 'deserve' to play teams such as Tranmere, Huddersfield and Crewe. But we/I need to concentrate on what this club does, not what others do. Hopefully last night's game is a glimpse of us concentrating on what we do – knowing the league and playing with decent players in the correct positions.
Talking of things going well, Stuart Watkiss talks to the paper about enjoying his first session with the yoof. I like Watkiss. He's no-nonsense. Now let's get these young lads proper good and in the first team.
Has John gone yet? No? Meh.
