Mardy Diary writes: Woohoo! Signing alert. See – I knew it was worth buggering off to the pub for an hour or two. Town have signed a striker from massive lower-League loiterers Scunthorpe.
So Connor Jennings – he of goal a game at Macclesfield stardom – has signed for Town on a initial month's loan. I'm assuming the initial month is just so we can assess how well he's recovered from injury before securing him until the end of the season. Please.
This is a cracking signing: let's be honest. Even recovering from injury I'm sure he'll do well, and besides he's only been out for a couple of months so this isn't a return from six-month injury sort of situation. At 22 he should recover quickly if he looks after himself. And I'd rather we got him now rather than wait until he's fully fit and risk losing him to another team. Can you tell I'm quite excited about this?
Some have suggested that it won't help Town because they aren't creating chances – but I don't buy this. A good striker, a good finisher, makes the most of their opportunities. We didn't always create lots of chances with Alan Connell (or even Liam Hearn) but they were both strikers who could get a goal from nowhere. Jennings looks this sort of player and he certainly scored plenty for a team that has yet to touch the play-offs in Macclesfield.
Of course, we'll have to stop conceding daft goals, or at least score more than we concede. However, at a first glance this looks a great signing – and hopefully will relieve a bit of pressure on our own strikers, helping them to find a bit of form.
Come on then, Town. Let's stop buggering about and finish the job off.
