Be careful what you wish for

Miss Guest Diary writes: Town had a comfortable win at the weekend, added to which Scunny and Hull both lost, and Europe thrashed the USA in the Ryder Cup. Everything seems OK to me in sporting terms right now, which doesn't provide much meat for the Diary to chew over. But here's a link to some pretty good photos of Saturday's game in a local Chester newspaper. My, their kit was very purple, wasn't it?

I can report that another of Town's new players is turning out to have been a good signing: Craig Clay. After seeming rather clumsy and out of his depth in his first few appearances, he has now received a thumbs-up from the back row of the Pontoon. He's been labelled the hairy yard dog – a hirsute Stacy Coldicott.

It was disappointing to see that there was no FA Cup giant killing for Cleethorpes Town, who lost 2-1 to North Ferriby United at the weekend. It was equally disappointing that the Telegraph continues its obsession with linking virtually every footballer to Grimsby, seeming far more interested in flagging up which team members used to play for us than describing what happened in the game.

While reflecting on my present contentment, I spared a thought for a friend who is a devoted Burnley supporter. I remembered going with him to the play-off final in 1994 when Burnley beat Stockport County to secure promotion to the second tier. That was back when Town were the 'big' club: we finished 10th in that division in the '94-95 season while Burnley were relegated back to the third tier. Since then the fortunes of the two clubs have diverged wildly and we all know which directions they have taken.

But as I watched Burnley lose 4-0 to West Brom yesterday and considered that they have yet to win a game this season and have scored only one goal, I thought that, lowly as Town currently are, I was probably the more content with my team this weekend.
