Cod Almighty | Diary
One or nowt, that's how it goes
17 June 2015
Happy Wednesday you weirdos, it's your London Diary here squinting at the laptop, eyes paralysed by hayfever. Now, something's been on my mind for a while now and today's the day to get it off both my mind and chest. Now, even though we didn't win at Wembley the other week, I had a cracking time. The atmosphere was electric, there was a sense of belonging, I had a few beers, we sang and sang like one team with one dream.
However, two things slightly blighted the trip and I need to bring them up. Firstly, a few rows in front of me there was a bloke wearing an 'English Defence League - Grimsby Division' hoodie on. I mean, what an absolute grade-A bell. My sister made an aside and said he probably thinks that's the league we'll be promoted to. We chuckled.
"Oh, you need to remain neutral at Cod Almighty." Nah, the guy is a bell and I hope I never see him wearing that thing at Blundell Park. I'm sure he's over the moon that we've signed a striker called Omar – whose name, incidentally, is Arabic for 'eloquent and gifted speaker', which I doubt our EDL bell is.
Secondly, the person in the row in front of me spent the whole of the game wearing a Grimsby Town scarf yet refreshing the Man City score, and every time they stuck one past Swansea he would get excited. Seriously mate, come on. One or the other. You're at Wembley.
Now, I can see why some people have two teams if, say, their father was born in east London and has supported West Ham 'man and boy' yet you were born in Grimsby when he got posted up to Binbrook when in the RAF and then you've spent your life supporting Grimsby Town but having a penchant for the Hammers. But if you support another team in the Premiership for lols, then in my eyes, you're a fool.
Imagine having a child who's not that great at sport but you still love them as they're your child and you take them to sporting activities and all's going well, then you spot someone else's kid who's actually quite good at sport, so you start watching them instead and paying them attention. That's weird. I'm not saying supporting another team in the Premiership is the same as looking at other people's children, but maybe have a look at your life. Oh, and if, in your Twitter bio, you say you support two football teams, you don't deserve to be on the internet.
In less depressing news, Ollie Palmer hasn't signed for us, but opted to sign for Leyton Orient. Oh, wait. Bugger, he's gone gone. You can't blame him for moving down the road from where he's from. All the best pal, ta for them goals.
Loads of rumours going about today. I'm not one to add to these, but Ben Davies just starting following Grimsby Town. SOMEONE GET TO MILLFIELDS!!! UTM!
