Division 4

Luton Town 1 Rea (59)

Grimsby Town 2 Bogle (29, 82)

Attendance: 8005 (539 away fans)

Cod Almighty man of the match: Shaun Pearson

James McKeown had an absolutely storming second half, but Shaun Pearson was, throughout, an excellently disciplined old-fashioned centre-half.

Our gaffer says

''With Luton, there's a certain way they play and lot of thought has gone into it and a lot of footage has been watched. We worked on it Thursday and I thought the whole squad, not just the lads that took to the field today, were excellent in their approach to that, and it made it a realistic exercise, got the points across and I think made it harder to Luton to get into their rhythm today."

Their gaffer says

"We didn't win the ball enough, and then, being on the front foot, we weren't good enough, and ironically we probably have enough chances to have got something from the game. I think I'd be harsh on Grimsby if I said we had enough chance to win the game. We probably did. But they had a few on the break late on when we were going for it as well. It's just disappointing really."

Thanks for clearing that up, Nathan.

Us

Not a fluke, but planned. Congratulations Mr Hurst.

What an excellent team display, defensively much sounder, and with a collective notion of what to do on the counter-attack. Tuton wore them down with relentless hassling and Jackson was the coup de grâce. Comley and Summerfield were a complementary pairing: the barnstorming box-to-boxer and the wily young blanket.

And then there's Omar.

Any more of this and we'll be better than 12th. Easy.

Them

A curiously mundane set of athletes, they were just big and strong. They didn't have much subtlety, for they just played in straight lines. Any organised team that stands up to their mental bullying should be able to repel their advances. In essence they have just one chat-up line which they repeat ad nauseum.

Their defence looked bamboozled by pace and by a team that passed to each other. Pelly Ruddock was an immense physical presence, but a little chaotic, while McGeehan was the embodiment of their ethos. He ran and he ran and he ran and he ran and he ran. And that's it. He ran.

They will wear opponents out with relentless wrestling, advancing through attrition, so will be in the promotion zone.

Grimsby 'til I die... or cry?

Never mind the leg room – feel the love of the bouncing boys.

Official warning

Mr D Deadman (Herts)

What's to complain about? He might have sent off a Lutonite for Tutonhauling, he could have sent off another for double dishing. Minor piffles, for he was consistent and let the game flow as the rain poured. Perfectly adequate and a perfectly adequate score of 7.777.
