I don't revolve, I evolve

21 June 2018

Ha, remember a year ago when a load of Port Vale fans went on social media to tell us Sam Kelly was a terrible signing and we'd end up in a relegation fight? You must remember that. We told them to sod off because they couldn't possibly know more than we did about their own player who they'd watched make 57 appearances and who we'd never heard of until he signed for us and there's no way we'll end up in a relegation fight because IN SLADE WE TRUST.

All of that was terrific fun, although perhaps not quite as fun as when Slade said don't worry that I haven't signed many players, it's better to wait and get the right player than sign someone quickly who turns out to be the wrong player, and then he waited and signed the wrong player. That was even more fun than having a massive unnecessary row with those well-intentioned Port Vale fans who turned out to be absolutely right.

Still, all Town aren't we. Kelly has been paid off with more of your ticket money, presumably en route to a new two-year deal at Alfreton Town or Boston United. The main thing here is to keep reminding the club of our high expectations, so that the club keeps signing players. We're a really big club, we shouldn't be happy with mid-table in the fourth division. In practice that always means we should always sign more players. That's what football is really about.

It was fun earlier this week as well, when your original/regular Diary had a look at the #GTFC hashtag on Twitter and pretty much everything on there was about the new Lincoln City shirt. That's the same Lincoln City who are the subject of several new threads of discussion on GTFC messageboards every week, running to hundreds of posts and many thousands of views. You know. That Lincoln City. The Lincoln City who are obsessed with us.

Anyway, never mind that – the fixtures are out, so when are we playing Lincoln City? In the middle of August and the middle of January, with the closest thing to a festive derby the visit of Mansfield on new year's day. Nobody was going to Carlisle anyway, so we might as well not go to it on a Tuesday night instead of waste a Saturday. We're at home on the opening day, which is nice. That's that over with, then. Look out for the next major event of the summer, when the Grimsby Telegraph will do an extensive build-up, live blog, and supporter reaction on the day the squad numbers are announced.

Bit of a grumpy diary? Hey, at least you got a diary today. We aim to please ourselves. Owt else? Diallang Jaiyesimi will be playing against us for Yeovil next season, and it'll cost you 12 quid to watch the friendly against Sunderland. T'ra for now!
