Season of two halves
5 December 2018
With FA Cup fever still in the air, Town are back to the league for the next month, with six fixtures to play. When looking at the season so far it is simple to analyse.
- The first ten games: 1 win, 2 draws, and 7 defeats; 6 goals scored and 18 conceded; 0.5 points per game
- The second ten games: 5 wins, 2 draws and 3 defeats; 13 goals scored and 9 conceded; 1.7 points per game
Now, obviously turning defeats into wins has been impressive and against some quality opposition too. But look at the change in the goals columns for the second ten games – double the number of goals scored, with half the goals conceded.
This is a great improvement and I’m sure the stats of a settled team will back this turnaround up. It’s encouraging and suggests what all of us already know: things take time.
Thunderdiary winces sometimes at the thought of what Twitter might have been like had it existed during the 1988-89 season. Can you imagine? As Buckley tinkered with his band of (mainly) misfits and unproven non-Leaguers, the messageboards would have been out in force, not giving him the opportunity to eventually find the players and system that would never be matched.
So let’s all enjoy this transformation and keep the expectations at a modest level. Who knows what the next ten games will bring?
