Trentside Diary writes: Less than two weeks to go and the excitement is rising. There were some happy fans after the win on Saturday. Yes, we know it’s a friendly and we’re not going to get carried away – but a win’s a win and, more importantly for pre-season, there were some promising performances. If we take chances when they come along we’re not going to go far wrong. How’s that for a game plan? Or even a strategy for the season?

There were also the usual moaners but some people, or more accurately some Town fans, aren’t happy unless they’re grumbling about something. If you can’t enjoy this point of the year, when everything is building up to that first match, when can you enjoy watching Town?

It was genuinely good to see that Elliott Whitehouse has recovered enough from his injury to make his first appearance at home for Town. I can’t imagine how frustrating the last year must have been for him. Let’s hope he has a great season.

Town unveiled a second phase of the graffiti wall on Saturday, featuring Dave Boylen, Joe Waters and Keith Alexander. Well-deserved recognition and a good decision in including all of them. Don’t you just love Dave Boylen? I can’t remember seeing him play but I see him every home game, taking time to catch up with people and chatting to fans. Other former players come along from time to time but Dave is there every match. He played for Town for 12 years but then stayed in the area and continued coming as a fan. He’s seen and been part of some of our best moments and some of our worst.

Let’s hope the upcoming season is one to make him proud. UTM!
