Keep the noise down
25 July 2019
There was a time when there'd be no news coverage of Grimsby Town, or anything else, unless there was actually any news. Those days have gone: when advertising revenues keep sites afloat, there has to be content for the adverts. And that content has to get clicks.
Domestic Diary won't go there. Cod Almighty does not have cause, but the writers, editors and sub-editors of the Grimsby Telegraph have livings to make. So sigh for them and with them when you read the link "key battles as Grimsby Town prepare to meet Peterborough United at Blundell Park".
Key battles? You haven't missed the memo. Saturday's game is not the FA Cup final. It is just a pre-season friendly. It has no keys. Nor battles, unless we really want half the side crocked before the league season starts.
In our campaign – sorry, no, our vague concern – to keep down the hype, villain of the week is Michael Jolley. He does not have the excuse of a Telewag sub-ed. But still he expresses disappointment that goalscorer Moses Ogbu did not perform a backflip after scoring on Tuesday night. Ogbu, you will remember, scored with a penalty. In another pre-season friendly. Against a club three divisions below Town in the league pyramid.
I begin to like the sound of Moses Ogbu. He may or may not turn out to be a good footballer, but he seems like a well-balanced human being.
