The usual suspects
2 March 2020
Trentside Diary writes: After battering Newport we were cobblers against Northampton. Actually, we weren’t cobblers, just not on our game. They were a nasty team who were time-wasting from the first minute and we didn’t deal with them.
Too many changes? Probably, but with only 11 games left how can the manager judge his current squad without giving them at least a couple of games each?
You never like to see us lose but I can't get too excited as our season is over. It's been great to see us try to play football but reaching the play-offs this season is unrealistic. I’ll enjoy watching the team develop and hope we bag a few goals along the way. This is the fourth season since we escaped from the conference and we haven’t had a good one yet. Let’s not get too agitated after one poor performance.
Some so-called supporters love pile on if there is a bad result. The usual suspects were out in force moaning at the match and then again on social media. A few of our fans are so poisonous, we really don’t deserve some of the players we’ve had.
There was glee from some that the manager had dropped James McKeown. Jimmy Mack has been a trouper and a loyal Town player. I like that he's now being encouraged to throw out from the back and as the team develops, so will he. There were suggestions he will ask for a transfer. I seriously don't think that's where we're at but if he decided to move on, then I would thank him for his service and be sorry to see him go. In the meantime, don’t rip into him.
There were other players slagged off during the game. Just keep it to yourself and your mates if you must. He's been here a couple of months and already Holloway has had to tell someone in the Main Stand to shut up. I'm thinking that would be one of the experts who always knows better than the manager. We're blessed to have so many experienced individuals giving their input.
We were one of the favourites to go down at the start of this season. Wherever we finish, we will be a long way from there. Given the seasons we've had in the last 20 years, the anticipation of what could be ahead is all I need at the moment.
Another thing to look forward to is Grimsby Town Women's appearance in the Lincolnshire Cup final. Goals by Beth Wharton and Alisha Dejonge gave Town a 2-0 win over Cleethorpes Town Ladies yesterday afternoon at the Linden Homes Club, before a 300+ crowd. They will play Lincoln City in the final in April. Grimsby Town Women retain their 100 per cent record in competitive fixtures.
