Killers, robbers and ladies in distress

21 September 2020

Miss Guest Diary writes: You know you are in trouble when you feel more upset by a piece of Premier League transfer business than your team losing 4-0 at home.

Having secured our season tickets, the expectation was that we'd be back in the Pontoon at the beginning of October. Now talk of the second wave of Covid 19 having already arrived is putting that prospect in doubt. As I continue to avoid watching the streaming coverage of games I fear that my connection to, and interest in, Town might soon be irrevocably damaged.

Once again we followed the new pre-match ritual on Saturday – travel to Cleethorpes but don't go to the game. Walking back to the car after lunch we thought we heard some Town fans singing in the distance, but it may just have been wishful thinking. Anything to conjure up a connection with past match day experiences.

We separated then – my other half to watch the game on iFollow at a mate's house, me to follow it on my phone at my brother's. I did venture out for a walk around 3 o'clock but the nearest I got to Blundell Park was the fabric shop on the next block – excellent stock, by the way.

Learning that Salford had scored four goals, three of them penalties, did surprise me a little but I found myself really struggling to care. In fact, the only thing that did arouse any strong emotion – and that emotion was anger rather than surprise – was reading on Twitter that some fans had criticised the Town players for taking a knee in support of Black Lives Matter. Well done to James Findlater for explaining the importance of the gesture and suggesting that the club are better off without such 'fans'. Hear, hear.

The list of injured Town key players continues to grow: currently Dave Moore is having to work his magic on Hanson, Waterfall, Pollock and Wright. With Ohman suspended, Hendrie only just back in training and Mohsni still "not ready”, Ollie needs to work his own magic in the transfer market if Town aren't to ship another four goals at Cheltenham next Saturday. Whatever.

And that piece Premier League transfer news that upset me? Diogo Jota to Liverpool. I have nothing against the move per se, but watching Jota, Jimenez and Traore run riot for Wolves over the summer has been a real treat. At the moment I am inclined to take my footballing pleasure wherever I can find it, such as José's lovely blue shirt yesterday. UTM
