Without you
7 October 2020
Basque Diary writes: It has been spoken about at length in recent months but I am going to go over old ground because it has really hit me this week. Football is pretty boring without supporters.
I currently reside in Wales where the only football taking place (outside the handful of teams who play in England) is the men's and women's top flight. It feels like we are getting ever closer to the stage where the season will have to be cancelled for the rest of the Welsh pyramid because time is running out, making rescheduling the inevitable postponed games from winter nigh on impossible.
This made me realise that, even though Town are sitting bottom of the table without a win and not having scored very many, I am not actually that bothered. It must be the same for Evertonians in the money league. How can they possibly enjoy this upturn in fortunes in the same way as if they were allowed into Goodison Park?
I am finding plenty of other distractions to take me away from football too. The cycling calendar is jam-packed with races at the moment (with crowds, of course), work, other hobbies and life in general are filling the gap football has vacated. How many people is this the same for? How many people will come back? There is no doubt in my mind that I will go back because I love football, but will the casual Mariner who goes to five or six games a season when its £20 just to get, in nearly £4 a pint, £3 for a programme etc etc?
We're in a dangerous place. The club is in a dangerous place. The marketing team - sorry, someone - at Fenty Towers needs to start wracking their brain for some ideas to bring people back when we can because, if not, when the initial buzz has worn off, we'll be fewer than we were before.
