The Diary

Cod Almighty | Diary

Cold, isn't it?

8 January 2021

After a morning spent firing snowballs at the kids (some of them even his own kids) and trying to figure out how he could use the snow as an excuse for not having done any work from home, Daubney Diary headed over to Cod Almighty to see if the Friday diary was up. That's when he remembered he was the one writing the diary.

So with my excuses out of the way early doors, what can my numb fingers cobble together for you in the next 15 minutes. Well you can bet if Paul Hurst had a snowball fight, his targets would be selected with care and his balls keep us shape. The returning gaffer has suggested there will be no incoming transfers before tomorrow's visit to Port Vale.

Luckily for a slacking diarist, the rest of the CA team and indeed you readers have again provided some quality content this week. The diaries have sparked plenty of debate on Twitter with Basque Diary's suggestions for the future at GTFC even catching the eye of Jason Stockwood.

Bottom of the Barrel and Trentside Diary touched on comings and goings with the latter drawing attention to the unfortunate and nasty habit that some fans have of slagging off departing players. Surely the self-proclaimed Best Fans in the World can do better than telling 19 year-olds at the start of their professional career that they're "stealing a living".

Yesterday we published new articles from Luke Pawley and Baz Whittleton. Luke's piece focused on scouting at GTFC but the discussion has broadened to other aspects of recruitment such as the statistical tools so successfully implemented at Brentford and elsewhere.

Baz's article is the first in his new regular column and just as Jase Ives did in this week's postbag, provides a balanced view on Ian Holloway's spell at Town. If you're looking for a more critical perspective on the subject, Miss Guest Diary on Monday hit the spot for me.

On to tomorrow and that trip to Port Vale. They've got the covers off their pitch after heavy snow so I'm assuming either they have enough confidence about the weather improving or they're hoping for more snow and a postponement. They remain managerless and while it's tempting to fear a bounce in form under caretaker Danny Pugh, we've seen from our own experience that problems aren't as simple to remedy. If you listened to all 23 minutes of that Hursty interview you'll be feeling positive that even without new bodies, we can get pick up three points at what has been a happy hunting ground on the past couple of visits.

Have a good weekend and UTM.
