Fenty's Epitaph: May, May, Money

11 February 2021

The news on Tuesday that Fenty isn’t standing for re-election to the council in May got me thinking. I'm no longer in the area so maybe it shouldn't matter to me but I care about Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes boroughs and they really deserve a better deal. Will Fenty stepping down make any difference? No. With Fenty out of the picture, it is less likely there will be awkward questions about the wider involvement of both councillors and officers with a convicted fraudster.

Fenty is busily writing his own glowing epitaph. How many people did he actually help through his council position and more importantly how? We've seen how trustworthy our non-chairman is but hey, people still vote for him and his mates. He obviously hadn't read the politicians' handbook chapter on "How to address situations where you have been caught red handed". I'm sure the line about "he had decided to spend more time with his family and his businesses" is meant to be used when you've been caught playing away. He must have thought that was a footballing reference.

If many of my diaries have been a bit Fenty obsessed it's because he's damaged our club and I will never forgive him. We must never forget. He will move on to pastures new and I hope never set foot in Blundell Park again. Those horse boxes don't drive themselves you know.

Tuesday brought the suspension of the salary cap in the bottom two leagues as it was ruled to have been rushed through with some elements not properly considered. I don't know if the cap was any better or worse than the rules based on percentage of turnover that we revert back to. Possibly easier to tell if a club was in breach but the Town board seemed to think we were spent up and then we weren't, or perhaps the board had put its own arbitrary cap in place and were using the Football League rule as an excuse? Fans of clubs who consider themselves too big for the bottom two divisions are jumping up and down at the prospect of spending more on players and attracting bigger names.

Hurst seems to have managed to bring a few players who look useful within the tiny budget he must have. He has my respect for doing that and it looks like Giles Coke could be joining us before the weekend. All in all, despite the global pandemic and our horrendous league position, I still have hope that 2021 could be OK and Hursty will pull off the greatest escape since Charles Bronson.

UTM! Fenty Out!
