Cod Almighty | Diary
A board of fools
1 April 2021
Trentside Diary writes: Two years ago today I wrote a diary suggesting that Fenty had left the club. As you well know it was just an April Fool's joke: not so much a joke rather an existential scream at being a supporter of a club in such a state, again. The greedy git who held the majority of shares was still hanging on to the once great club that he was euthanising one season at a time.
Two years on and where are we? The tweet from BBC Humberside yesterday evening suggesting that Tom Shutes is no longer part of the consortium was concerning. It was never going to be easy to bring this sort of deal over the line when dealing with our major shareholder. I am still hoping the other two consortium members are able to proceed but if Fenty has done anything to cause this, I do hope that they will go public and tell us what the issue is. One rumour is that Fenty wants to stay on the board after the takeover. I can't even start with this because I would still be ranting next week. If he has any part in this sudden change or in the future running of the club then FC Grimsby it is.
My nervousness had been that I'd submit a diary and five minutes later the takeover would be officially announced. Stuff it, I'd take that, I just want it to happen. I'm sure someone at Cod Almighty Towers would rush in and update today's offering.
As a great distraction I've enjoyed the Town "rumours". We are such a crackpot club at times that it's really difficult to tell the difference between truth and fiction. I did once see Ivano Bonetti in the Laceby Little Chef in deep conversation with a couple of very stylish looking chaps in sharp suits. There was no point in trying to listen in as they were talking Italian. Unfortunately this was the days before mobile phones with cameras. We were desperately hoping he was buying into the club and there were better days to come. Where have we heard that before? There's so much water under that particular bridge.
I don’t take a huge amount of interest in international football. I can't be doing with all the jingoistic rubbish that's spouted but I will watch if there’s nothing better on and I enjoy a good tournament. Norwegian clubs are urging their Football Association to boycott the Qatar World Cup. "We should think about football and why so many love our sport. That corruption, modern-day slavery and a high number of workers' deaths are the fundament to our most important tournament, the World Cup, is totally unacceptable." Exactly this. So many countries with poor records on human rights try to improve their global image by bidding to hold tournaments or by buying up successful clubs. What a pity there aren't similar actions here.
Finally, a big thank you to Lisa "in the office" for contacting Harry and he was happy for her to pass on his number. We've had a lovely chat and will be keeping in touch until we can be back at Blundell Park. We both agreed we need to get back to seeing people at football, and with it under new owners would be the icing on the cake.
UTM! Fenty Out!
