More votes for our best ever relegated XI

16 June 2021

Patrick Conway forms an orderly queue to name his favourites to join our all time relegation team.

Mariner's Bygones

After reading the nominees for relegation stalwarts can I suggest three who stood out in both 1958-59 and 1963-64 demotions from Division Two? Don Donovan, Ron Cockerill and Keith Jobling. The trio had also started in the 1961-62 promotion. They evoke happy schoolboy memories.

Talking of bygone eras and the suggestion of Tweedy, another pre war footballer - Charlie Wilson - might merit consideration for the right back berth. I spent many a happy hour with him when preparing the centenary exhibition. He recalled the 1931-32 relegation season, numerous injuries and the team in transition with Tweedy, Glover, Betmead and Craven amongst others making their mark. Charlie was a regular in the Queens and the ball used in the 1925-26 Division Three (North) promotion decider against New Brighton, signed by all 22 players was in a glass case on his sideboard. I wonder what happened to that football.

Letters Ed responds: Thank you, Patrick. We'd love to know what happened to that ball too. Definitely one for the museum at the new ground... Where's that ball? Do you know? Tell us here.

Who do you think should be in our best relegated XI? Tell us here. We're dying to know. Honestly.
