Judge us by what we do on the pitch, not our half-hearted scallywags

19 August 2021

Trentside Diary writes: As Town fans come to terms with another barren Saturday, and for some no refund on their train tickets to Bromley, there has been a bit of chuntering.

A few other clubs have been flinging accusations of us postponing while trying to get players fit before we start. Really? I'm sure for a postponement there must be league rules. What this makes me think is that other fans have sized us up and think we will be in the mix towards the end of the season. Excellent, that's what I like. In the meantime, all Town fans need to say is "Get yourselves well lads, it's going to be hell of a season".

The club has been tweeting about the "iconic" baths in the changing rooms being removed. I can't imagine they have been used for years but someone might know better. They look like something that would have been condemned decades ago unless they were on a farm full of sheep dip but in days gone by the communal baths were always a favourite shot for the media. Just look at that dream team.

Stockport tickets are on sale, in case you missed the news. Is Stockport most known for its pyramid? My main memory is being there a few years ago when Greater Manchester boys in blue embarrassed themselves by being "rufty-tufty". They kept themselves busy rounding up the scallywags. By scallywags I mean a few youngsters who weren't actually doing anything wrong other than going to the football on their own. It was probably some of the old hands who missed the days of policing football specials and running fights every weekend. A few of the more respectable (read middle-aged) fans argued, and ultimately the youngsters were set free. 1-0 to the Mariners' fanbase.

Much of my football musing springs from matches in the dim and distant past. My diary writing this morning was interrupted by a call from another Town fan. Part of the conversation was a discussion about the Barrett stand. I cut my teeth in the Barrett, moved to the Harrington open corner for a couple of years and then joined a friend in the Imperial open corner. It says much about my Town watching that none of these still exist. I have a very specific view of what it is to be a Town fan. It's been tempered by having sons who support Town but it does skew what I might want from a matchday experience.

Town and the Trust will always need youngsters involved in helping to shape the club. Similarly, Cod Almighty are keen to encourage a more youthful viewpoint in our diaries. Do you fancy being a diarist? We're on the lookout for a new scribbler who can contribute a regular diary. You don't need experience, just feel like you have something to say about Town or football and maybe your mates are sick of hearing it. You might be anywhere on a spectrum from budding journalism student to not keen on writing but just fancy challenging yourself. Go on, give it a go!
