Form is temporary, class is permanent!
7 December 2021
So, our recent form still isn't looking too good. Is it the players' attitude? Is it Hurst's stubbornness? Both of these have been suggested by some fans. Is it the football gods warning us not to get too uppity after our amazing start? Almost certainly. Like Miss Guest Diary, I didn't make it to Dagenham and Redbridge. I didn't fancy the trek and I feel no need to go back to that particular area of London since doing some work down there many years ago. No offence if you live there.
After Saturday I'm sort of glad I didn't make it but it's very difficult to have an objective view of what we looked like, before the McAtee incident and afterwards. "Shite" was the general view on social media but that seemed more from people listening than those who were there. There seemed to be a couple of brief spells around our two goals when we sounded like we got our act together but it's really difficult to tell. Try to temper your frustration by remembering we have a new squad. We had an amazing start and it's faltered but "Hurst Out"? Get a grip. You may do well on Football Manager but you don't actually manage a professional football team. We're still up there, let's stay behind the lads.
I wonder why Town's games always seem like the last commentary to go live on the BBC, often several minutes after the kick-off? I also don't understand why Radio Humberside still insist on cutting away from the game for updates from the Scunthorpe and Hull games. I don't think I have ever met a Town fan who has any genuine interest in their games and score updates can be checked online. Conversely, I cannot imagine a Hull or Scunthorpe fan listening to the Town commentary just for the updates from their games. My personal opinion is "I couldn't give a stuff. Please stop". Am I completely out of step with other fans?
Where I know I am out of step with a tiny minority is those numpties who go to the football for a bit of trouble. Probably little boys trying to look hard or big boys with no self-control. There was at least one trying very hard to stir up trouble with other Town fans at Solihull and then a tiny number fighting among themselves at Dagenham and Redbridge.
In fact, I'll back up here. They are not "Town fans". I keep repeating "tiny minority" as we know that's what it is, but it's still unacceptable and it creates a narrative for all those police football liaison people who like to wield their power. If they were genuine fans they would care more about the reputation of the club. Let's hope they get rooted out. If I went to a pub where I didn't like the aggressive attitude I'd not go again. Football. It's a funny old game.
UTM!
