Goal drought
8 December 2021
One of our regular readers adds some more clarity to Ron's recent article on Jamille Matt.
Stat attack
What Ron overlooks in his lively, entertaining and interesting piece is that Jamma's goal drought began as soon as he came into the Football League. He was bought by Fleetwood for £350k, from Kidderminster where he had been prolific, to replace Jamie Vardy.
In three seasons at the Lancashire Highbury, Jamille started 32 games, made 24 appearances as sub and scored 14 goals. Whatever his goalscoring problem was should not be put down entirely to Mariner tactics. Loan spells at Stevenage and Plymouth brought 4 goals from 15. He was dogged by injury while at Fleetwood and also, as Ron recalls at Blackpool, so perhaps some sympathy is due.
Regardless, I'll forgive him all after that timely goal at the Pontoon End.
