Cod Almighty | Diary
Cry havoc, and let slip the cods of war
29 July 2022
Or should it be "haddocks of war?" Either way, let 'em slip.
It's been a mad couple of years as a Town fan. With Holloway and lockdown providing us with the worst season in our history, followed by astonishing play-off heroics giving us a stormer of a soccerfest last time round, there's barely been a moment to relax. Today we stand on the cusp, or precipice if you prefer, of a bright shiny new season in a bright shiny new league.
This calls for a diary of momentous proportions, detailing our hopes and dreams for the coming 46 games. Sadly, it won't get one, not least because my car had to go into the garage leaving me with just minutes to write this. The reader familiar with my work will also know that momentous isn't really my forte, being a dealer mainly in nonsense and back-fence tittle-tattle.
So, write your own diary in your heads. Write it to your own specifications, and fill it with as much joy, angst or anger as you like. This is your club, and your year, and your life. We have had so many false dawns, but hopefully this dawn will be the real McCoy and not just someone shining a light in our eyes. Perhaps we can put the long dark night of the Fenty behind us.
Actually, "Night of the Fenty" could be a great horror film. The strapline could be "He's in the Building and His Ducks Are in a Row." I’d pay to see that. Come to think of it, I've already been paying to see it for 20 years. At least it had a good ending.
We've got Andy Smith back, as you know. Hurrah. Many of the new boys are already injured, but don't despair. There is a long way to go, and there will be twists, turns and whoop-de-dos before spring comes round again.
I've been in a few changing rooms in which the last words the manager said before kick-off were "enjoy it lads." What more can be said? Apart from making it more inclusive?
Enjoy it, lads and lasses. In the words of Jane's Addiction, "they may say those were the days, but for us, you know, these are the days."
