Postbag: oh Gary boy, the Pontoon drummer's calling

6 October 2010

Have you missed me? What do you mean you haven't noticed there's been no postbag for three weeks.

Most of these letters have answered themselves, but presented chronologically, they show the curve of Town's recent fortunes.

Play your part in writing the historical record ... and then, when you are done, write to us as well.

Down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself called Danny

I know Town could do with another striker to replace Peacock who seems to have gone awol this season, but did we have to get a Danny? In recent years players with this name haven't exactly shone for us. Think Boshell, Coyne, North..

I think Woodses should be combing the lower leagues for a striker called Gary. All the Garys I can recall playing for Town were at the very least OK, and some were great...Birtles, Childs, Croft, Jones.

I understand Gary Lund was pretty good too. I never saw him play for Town but he did sell me a great flat in Nottingham.

Looking back on not looking forward

Hi There,

I'm not sure saying I am "looking forward to seeing Town on Saturday" (at Altrincham) accurately describes my emotions after listening to Tuesday's match on t-internet! However as an exile living in Sale my travel expenses will be minimal. The same cannot be said for any North-East Lincolnshire based fans that follow the directions on the SNOS, which are OK if you live in Birmingham, but not much good if you're travelling from Grimsby! Don't go anywhere near the M6.

We have more in common with Altrincham than you might think. They didn't take the easy route out when on the verge of bankruptcy a few years ago and have cleared their debts without administration. However doing the right thing has not translated onto on the field success.

I really hope Neil Woodses gets a result on Saturday as we just have to break this managerial merry-go round. Unfortunately Neil's teams seem to mirror his own in and out form as a player. I recall his performance against QPR (Ferdinand, Peacock, etc.) in the cup, probably the best performance I have seen from a Grimsby striker.

Up the Mariners.

Potted history

Surely the 2-1 win at Maine Rd against Man City in the FA Cup 3rd Round replay in 1959 is worthy of mention? Ron Cockerill's free kick was one of the best ever scored for the Mariners.

from Ken Wright

Letters Ed responds: A game that seems to have crept through the holes in our collective memory, Ken. Fell free to tell us more

Connell's no con

Hey that Connell chap looks quite handy - he can't stop scoring. I can't remember the last time we had a striker who scored goals regularly, over the last few seasons we seem to have signed anyone with "striker" on their CV regardless of whether they'd ever put the ball in the net in a competitive game. No need for Woods to tell us he looks great in training because he actually scores goals in matches! Huzzah! Hold on, keep it quiet or he'll go to Hull or Scunny. Or Donny or Lincoln. The perils of having so many big club's nearby snapping up our promising players.

from Rich Mills

Letters Ed responds: A goal drought should help. Meantime, Cod Almighty would like to make clear that the headline to this letter is copyrighted (and Rich would no doubt like to make clear it was ours, not his, and the rest of the Cod Almighty team would like to know where the Letters Editor gets off suddenly hiding behind the first person plural)

Drum-k and disorderly

I have no particular opinion for or against the Pontoon drummer, as I sit in the Lower Beer Stand, like all sensible people. But why does he feel the need to give one resounding thump on the drum whenever the opposition swing over a free kick or corner? He doesn't half look stupid when (as usual) the ball ends up in our net. Does he want them to score?

from Phil Watson

Letters Ed responds: Fatalism, no doubt. And with regards to the headline, Phil, the Letters Editor and everyone else at Cod Almighty refer you to the answer we gave previously.

Next stop, the Southern Premier League

Living in Bristol, I shall be going to Forest Green, Newport County and Bath City this season! Hurrah for the BSP!

from John Chablo

OK, tell us about it.
